Dr Dom Smith

Dominic Smith is an advanced GP trainee in the final year of his specialisation, with plans to complete his fellowship by the end of 2024. He graduated with an MBChB from the University of Auckland in 2018 and has been practicing medicine full-time for the past six years. His early medical career involved three years as a junior doctor, working across various hospital specialties at both Waikato and Auckland Hospitals.

For the past three years, Dominic has been undergoing specialized training in General Practice, working four to five days per week at Tiakina Te Ora, a small practice in Papakura, Auckland. The clinic serves over 3,400 patients with only two full-time physicians and a couple of nurse practitioners. Dominic is responsible for the primary care of more than 1,000 patients. As the only male clinical staff member, he sees a high proportion of male patients and focuses on preventative care, particularly for diseases that lead to male mortality. His areas of emphasis include cardiovascular screening, prostate and bowel cancer screening, as well as smoking and alcohol cessation. This experience has cultivated a strong interest in men’s health.

For the past six months, Dominic has also been working at Selfcare Men’s Health Clinic, which addresses men's health issues that are often overlooked in general practice due to resource constraints and lack of specific training. His work focuses on conditions such as hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and other sexual health concerns. The clinic serves approximately 150 men, primarily for hormone replacement therapy and sexual health management. Dominic also promotes cardiovascular and prostate health screening, taking advantage of opportunities to provide preventative care for patients who do not regularly visit their GPs. The clinic currently sees 5–10 new patients weekly, with demand expected to increase as more men seek health advice.

Dominic believes that attending the T4L Men’s Health Conference will provide valuable insights to further enhance the health and wellbeing of men in Aotearoa.
